South Florida Premier High School will look for a new head coach in football programs when Patrick Sarten announced Friday that he is taking a position as a defensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins.
He took over as head coach at American Heritage (Plantation) in January 2016 when Mike Rumph took a position with the University of Miami and went 65-10 in his six-season tenure.
He led the Florida powerhouse to state titles in 2016, 2017 and 2020. They have been in the top 25 of Maxpreps in each of those three years.
Some of the best talent in the country came from Heritage during Surten with the school. In the 2021 NFL draft, six players from the program were selected for the title of his son, Patrick Sartain II, who was ranked ninth overall by the Denver Broncos.
Six players selected in a draft from a school are second in 2021 at IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) With seven.
A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Surten returns to where he played seven NFL seasons before moving to Kansas City. He joined his former teammate Sam Madison in defensive back coaching. Madison spent two years coaching as an assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) Before taking a position with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019. The Dolphins appointed a four-time pro bowler on Wednesday.
Heritage instantly became the best job opportunity in the country. Their 2023 class consists of five players rated as three-star recruits or higher, with the title being five-star wide receiver Brandon Inis and four-star running back Mark Fletcher.
The Patriots have advanced 111-18 since 2012 and have won state titles in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2020.
